Snapshot of the major achievements the SCCA has delivered includes:

  • Worked with retailer associations to achieve Sunday and public holiday trading, and expanded mid-week trading hours, around Australia;
  • Protected the interests of owners and investors in reviews of retail tenancy legislation around Australia and in reviews of national competition law;
  • Lodged major submissions to inquiries by the Productivity Commission and parliamentary committees which has prevented the recommendation of harmful regulation;
  • Continued to advocate for rational planning and zoning laws which reduce the cost of development and provide an equitable basis for retail development;
  • Removed costly and unnecessary real estate licensing requirements on staff in Queensland and prevented unnecessary and costly public liability insurance requirements on staff in NSW;
  • Negotiated codes of practice to remove areas of conflict in shopping centre management and to ensure fair practices by shopping centre contractors;
  • Defeated proposed changes in land valuation methodology in Queensland which would have substantially increased land tax payments and council rates for shopping centre owners and retailers;
  • Defeated an industrial campaign to pay above-award payments and conditions for cleaners in shopping centres;
  • Achieved sensible disability access building regulations which will assist disabled people in shopping centres without imposing unrealistic costs;
  • Defeated proposals in Victoria which would have limited the use of CCTV in public areas, thereby jeopardising the safety and security of shopping centre customers;
  • Negotiated industry guidelines for sales and occupancy cost reporting, therefore ensuring standardised reporting throughout the shopping centre industry.
